Alopecia Areata and Nails

Some people with alopecia areata experience pitting of their nails. This can look like pinpoint dents or white streaks, patches and/or flaking of nails. For some people, it’s a minor inconvenience and barely noticeable. For others, nail pitting can cause fragile, flaky and even painful nails.

 Taking Care of Your Nails

  1. Consider protection. Wear gloves for cleaning, gardening, dishwashing, or any wet work. Avoid prolonged soaking in water — it weakens nails.
  2. Trim. Keep nails short to prevent snagging or splitting.
  3. Moisturize. Massage cuticle oil or a thick, unscented cream into nails and cuticles frequently to prevent breakage and flaking.

FAQs

Can I still get a manicure if I have nail pitting?

Absolutely! Choose gentle products. Skip gel, acrylic, or dip nails, as they can worsen brittleness and cause trauma to the nails. Try to avoid harsh buffing or filing.

You can try a nail hardener to build strength. Ridge fillers help smooth out the appearance of pitting and can be used alone or as a base coat prior to color polish. If using nail polish, pick one labeled “breathable” or “3-free/5-free” (no formaldehyde, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate) if possible. Use gentle, acetone-free nail polish remover. If you’re unsure about products, check with your dermatologist.
