NAAF Legislative Mentor Program

become a NAAF Legislative Mentor

Thank you for your interest in being a NAAF Legislative Mentor

The NAAF Legislative Mentor program is open to alopecia areata patients and immediate family members ages 12-17.  Much like the adult Legislative Liaisons, you will reach out and build relationships with your Congressional Representative and Senators.

As a Legislative Mentor, you and a parent or guardian (who will need to sign on as a Legislative Liaison) will schedule one in-person or virtual meeting per year with your Representative’s district, or local, office.  You will do the same with the local offices of your two Senators. At these meetings, you will tell your alopecia areata story (as much or as little as you feel comfortable in sharing), and then present our requests, or “asks,” for how the legislator can help the alopecia areata community.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before!  We provide the training and materials.  All you have to do is tell your lawmakers about yourself and what they can do to help.   Always remember, the most important things are building a relationship with that office while educating them about alopecia areata.

Also, as a Legislative Mentor, you will be invited to attend monthly meetings of NAAF’s Advocacy Committee.  This is provided as a “bonus” as many Legislative Mentors are interested in government studies, and the Advocacy Committee meetings provide an update on what’s happening in Washington, DC as it pertains to the alopecia areata community.

Reach out to Gary Sherwood at gary@naaf.org if you would like to learn more.

Thank you to Pfizer and Sun Pharma for their support of NAAF’s advocacy programming.
