Sources of Support

The National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) aspires to create a world where no one suffers from alopecia areata. Whether it's driving collaborative research on multiple continents, connecting people with meaningful support and developing educational materials to help them cope with this autoimmune disease, or advocating to enhance how alopecia areata is perceived and approached — we are there.

Achieving our mission requires reliance on a broad base of support. Each year, thousands of people give generously to support NAAF. Our funding sources also include foundation and government grants, sponsorship and fees from biopharmaceutical companies, and corporate support of local events as well as fees for advertising and exhibiting.

Our 2018 sources of support include:

  • Individual Giving accounts for 67% of operational revenue and is comprised of:

    • Special events are led by NAAF community volunteers throughout the year to engage participants, raise awareness and bring in revenue critical to supporting our mission. Approximately 20% of NAAF’s total annual revenue is raised through special events ($424K in 2018).
    • More than 4,300 individuals donated just over $1 million through our non-event giving programs accounting for just over 48% of the Foundation’s total annual revenue ($1.02K in 2018).
  • Biopharmaceutical Support: The pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies listed below provided funding for a variety of programmatic efforts and collaborations, including: sponsorship for patient conferences and research summits; a consortium to design an instrument that measures what matters to patients for use in clinical trials; and fees for services like convening focus groups for treatment and trial design as well as clinical trial recruitment. Altogether, 8 biopharmaceutical and related companies provided 28% of NAAF’s overall funding ($592K in 2018). Amounts received from specific companies are outlined below.

  • Other Corporate Support: Corporations across the country support NAAF’s mission through sponsorship of local events, corporate matching gifts and volunteerism grants, and by advertising in NAAF’s newsletter and on our website as well as exhibiting at the patient conference. Other Corporate support contributed just over 1% of NAAF’s operational funding ($30K in 2018).

  • Foundation and Government Grants: When our program needs align with the priorities of grant-making foundations and government agencies like the NIH or PCORI, we apply for grant support. This accounted for 2% of operating revenue ($45K in 2018).

NAAF is grateful to all the committed individuals who want to do something about alopecia areata now — individuals who raise money, volunteer their time, participate in events, conduct cutting edge research, advocate for change, and provide critical programs and services to families affected by alopecia areata. We value our partnerships with all those who have this shared commitment, including our sister alopecia areata organizations around the world, the National Institutes of Health, universities and medical schools, corporations, and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Our collective commitment and resources will enable us to achieve a world free of suffering from alopecia areata more quickly.
